Thomas J. Hutchison III is a senior executive with more than 40 years of experience focused in the lodging, hospitality, travel, golf, seniors’ housing, real estate development and financial services industries. Professional Profile
In January 1998, Mr. Hutchison joined CNL Financial Group, Inc. – one of the nation’s largest, privately held real estate investment and finance companies, where he held several key executive positions over an eight year period: CEO of CNL Hotels & Resorts, Inc., CEO of CNL Retirement Properties, Inc., CEO of CNL Income Properties, Inc., CEO of CNL Real Estate Services, Inc., and CEO of CNL Realty & Development, Inc. In 1998, CNL Retirement Properties, Inc. was a public, unlisted REIT with three staff members, and no properties. Under Mr. Hutchison’s leadership, the Healthcare REIT acquired $3.8 billion in over 300 properties, and was sold for $5.3 billion to Health Care Properties, Inc. in October of 2006. CNL Hotels & Resorts, Inc., also a public, unlisted REIT started in 1998, began with $250 million in properties. When Mr. Hutchison became CEO, he turned it into one of the largest and most distinctive lodging companies in the country. More than 150 upscale and luxury hotels and resorts were acquired into the portfolio, including such iconic properties as: Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa in Maui; Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix; Hotel del Coronado outside of San Diego; Doral Golf Resort & Spa outside of Miami; La Quinta Resort & Spa and PGA West outside of Palm Springs; and Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott at Grand Lakes in Orlando. In April of 2007, the company was purchased for $7.6 billion by Morgan Stanley.
From 1993 to 1999, he was chairman and chief executive officer of Atlantic Realty Service, Inc. and TJH Development Corporation. Additionally from 1993 through 1999, he has fulfilled a number of long-term consulting assignments for global corporations, including managing the turnaround of a large Sino-American joint venture in Nanjing, China. From 1990 to 1993, Mr. Hutchison was the court-appointed president and chief executive officer of General Development Corporation, a real estate community development company, where he assumed the day-to-day management of the $2.6 billion NYSE-listed company through the reorganization process. From 1986 to 1990, he was the chairman and chief executive officer of a number of personally owned real estate-related companies engaged in the master planning and land acquisition of 40 residential, industrial and office development projects. From 1978 to 1986, Mr. Hutchison was the president and chief executive officer of Murdock Investment Corporation, overseeing 18,000 employees among seven business units. In this capacity, he managed an average of $350 million of new development per year for over nine years, and the turnaround, start-up and growth of Murdock-owned operating companies, including: Murdock Development Corporation; Madison Warehouse Corporation; Gettell Air Conditioning Corp.; Cannon Realty & Development; Oceanic Properties Corp.; Canton Companies of Baltimore; and Canton Insurance Company.

Mr. Hutchison wrote a chapter published in Donald Trump’s book, The Best Real Estate Advice I Ever Received and lead writer on Authentic Leadership: Goals for Successful CEO's.
Mr. Hutchison is currently a Director for Marriott Vacations Worldwide, KSL Capital Partners LLC, Hersha Hospitality Trust, Target Healthcare REIT Limited, and Trinity Forum Europe. He is also a member of The Real Estate Roundtable, Leadership Council for Communities in Schools, and the Advisory Council of the Erickson School of Aging Studies. Additionally, he serves as a Senior Advisor to Rise Up! and other non-profit organizations and various service industry public companies. He is a former Director of ClubCorp, Inc., ING Direct Bank, Metro Bank, Maryland Bank Corporation, US Chamber of Commerce, Burris Foods, Inc., Trinity Forum USA, Atlantic Gulf Communities Corporation, Zapata Corporation, General Development Corporation, Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida, CNL Retirement Properties, Inc. and CNL Hotels & Resorts, Inc. and the Knox Theological Seminary.
