Join us on November 16 at 6 p.m. at the Eaton House in Washington, DC, for a unique behind-the-scenes conversation about GRACE, an electrifying new musical celebrating the perseverance of family and the power of tradition by acclaimed American composer Nolan Williams Jr. PathNorth’s Doug Holladay will moderate a panel with Nolan WIlliams, Jr. and culinary and hospitality leaders on exploring the history and hopes for African Americans and others in these critical industries.
GRACE captures a milestone day in the life of the “Mintons,” a Philadelphia-based family with a long history of African American culinary traditions, especially through their century-old restaurant, “Minton’s Place.” Though GRACE’s “Minton’s Place” is fictional, its narrative is not.
Black-owned establishments have long struggled to overcome challenges including gentrification, access to capital, career development opportunities, and more. The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly exacerbated the problem. Now, 25% of the country’s independent restaurants will not survive. Separate out Black-owned restaurants from that group, and the number increases significantly.
An official selection of the Humana Festival for New American Plays, GRACE debuts in Washington, DC at the historic Ford’s Theatre in March 2022. PathNorth will organize a group outing for the show's premier. Information to follow.
